What this site is
This is an independent educational resource about Africanized honey bees, better known as “killer bees,” and the honey they make. It’s run by beekeepers based in Fostoria, Ohio.
Killer bees are one of the things people worry about most and understand least. Honey labels are a close second. We built this site to put clear, sourced answers in one place: what Africanized bees are, where they live, how to stay safe around them, and how to judge any jar of honey, including one labeled “killer bee honey.”
Nothing is for sale on this site, and it isn’t connected to any government agency. We cite agencies and universities; we don’t speak for them.
Why beekeepers in Ohio?
Africanized honey bees aren’t established in Ohio (see Are There Killer Bees in Ohio?). That’s part of the point. Most of what Ohioans hear about killer bees comes from headlines and movies. As beekeepers, we spend a lot of time explaining what’s actually buzzing around a yard or living in a wall, and what isn’t. This site is the long version of those conversations.
How we write
Everything here follows a few rules:
- Facts come from real sources. Bee biology, range, and safety guidance come from the USDA Agricultural Research Service, university extension services (Ohio State, University of Florida, University of Arizona, Texas A&M), and federal agencies like the FDA, CDC, and FTC. Each article lists its sources at the bottom.
- We say what we don’t know. If we can’t verify something, we leave it out or say so.
- No scare tactics. Africanized honey bees deserve respect, not panic.
- No health claims. Honey is a food. We report what the research says and nothing more.
- We update. Ranges shift and research moves. When a source changes, we revise the article.
This site is general information, not medical, legal, or pest control advice. If someone is being stung many times or shows signs of an allergic reaction, call 911.
